Did Your Hair Get Too Much Sun and Salt Water This Holiday?
At Indie Sky & Co, we know the summer holidays are all about fun in the sun, salty swims, and endless beach days—but your hair may not love it as much as you do! If your locks are feeling dry, brittle, or sporting split ends after all that UV exposure and ocean bliss, don’t worry—we’ve got your back (and your hair!).
Signs of Sun-Damaged Hair
After a season of soaking up the rays and diving into salt water, your hair might be showing signs of distress:
Dryness: Is your hair feeling like straw? Sun and salt water strip away natural oils, leaving it parched.
Split Ends: Those pesky ends may have split due to sun exposure and over-styling.
Faded Color: If you’ve had your hair coloured at our Drummoyne hair salon, you may notice it’s lost a bit of its shine. UV rays are notorious for fading hair colour.
Tangles: Saltwater makes hair prone to knots, leaving it feeling unmanageable.
How to Fix Sun and Salt Damage
Don’t let summer fun leave your hair feeling sad! Here’s what you can do:
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Use a rich moisturising shampoo and conditioner to restore hydration. At Indie Sky & Co, we love products like Kevin Murphy’s Hydrate-Me Wash and Rinse to nourish thirsty locks.Repair with a Deep Treatment
Book a hydrating treatment at our salon in Drummoyne to replenish lost moisture and strengthen your strands. Treatments like Kerasilk Reconstruct can work wonders.Trim Away Split Ends
A quick trim can breathe new life into your hair by removing those sun-damaged ends. It’s the easiest way to refresh your style and keep your hair looking healthy.Protect Your Hair Moving Forward
Invest in a heat protectant spray to shield your hair from further UV exposure.
Wear a hat or scarf during the hottest parts of the day.
Rinse your hair with fresh water after swimming to remove salt or chlorine.

Caring for Your Hair Extensions: Tips for Looking After Your Hair Extensions
At Indie Sky & Co, we know that hair extensions can completely transform your look, adding length, volume, and confidence. To ensure your extensions stay as flawless as the day you walked out of our salon in Drummoyne, proper care is essential. Whether you’ve chosen tape-ins or clip-ins hair extensions, maintaining your extensions will keep them looking beautiful and natural for longer. Here’s our comprehensive guide to caring for your hair extensions.
Washing Your Hair Extensions
Be Gentle: Always use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to protect the bonds or tapes. These products are less harsh and will keep your extensions hydrated and healthy.
Frequency: Wash your hair extensions no more than twice a week to avoid overloading them with water and products.
Technique: When washing, use lukewarm water and gently massage shampoo into your scalp, avoiding tugging or pulling at the extension bonds.
Pro tip: At Indie Sky & Co, we recommend using salon-quality products like Kevin Murphy or Kerasilk, available in our Drummoyne salon, for the best results.
Brushing Your Hair Extensions
Use the Right Brush: Invest in a soft-bristle brush or a detangling brush designed for extensions to avoid pulling on the bonds.
Brush Regularly: Brush your extensions at least twice a day to prevent tangling, starting from the tips and working your way up.
Hold the Roots: Always hold the roots of your extensions while brushing to reduce stress on the bonds or tapes.
Styling Tips for Hair Extensions
Heat Styling: While extensions can handle heat styling, it’s important to use a heat protectant spray to minimise damage. We recommend Oribe’s Heat Styling Spray, available at Indie Sky & Co.
Avoid Overheating: Keep your styling tools at a moderate temperature to avoid weakening the bonds.
Sleep Safely: Before bed, tie your hair into a loose braid or ponytail to prevent tangling and friction while you sleep.
General Maintenance Tips
Avoid Oil-Based Products: Oils can loosen the bonds of tape-ins or other semi-permanent extensions. Stick to lightweight, extension-friendly products.
Visit Your Stylist: Regular maintenance appointments at Indie Sky & Co in Drummoyne will ensure your extensions remain securely in place and look their best.
Stay Hydrated: Extensions don’t produce natural oils like your own hair, so keeping them moisturised is crucial for their longevity.
Caring for your hair extensions doesn’t have to be complicated. With these simple tips and the expert advice of the team at Indie Sky & Co, your extensions can stay flawless and fabulous for months to come.

Special Occasion Make-up Tips
We don’t just do hair at Indie Sky and Co. Did you know we also do spray tans and make-up. Formal and bridal make-up are two of our favourite looks to create as we understand the importance of getting it right for your special day or night.
With so many looks to go for, we like to create something that best showcases you. Our professional team are here to analyse you first and then discuss the look you would like to achieve.
When it comes to weddings and formals, you want to be sure you’re picking a make-up look that makes your features shine (and that you won’t look back at photos and regret terribly). So, here are some of our favourite looks to consider:
All Natural
Take a page out of Meghan Markle’s book and let your natural features shine through, freckles and all. After all, do you really want to remember your big day looking like somebody completely different? Stick to natural, dewy foundation, earthy tones on the eyes and cheeks and a nude lip. Classic, sophisticated and effortlessly beautiful.
Glossy Lips
Glossy lips are fun and youthful and a nice change from matte lips. Go for lighter shades of pink or peach paired with a heavier eye. The best part is that glosses won’t stain your lips and can easily be topped up during the day.
Bold Lip
The classic bold lip is a great evening look that will never go out of fashion. Be careful not to go too heavy on the eyes if you’re going for a darker shade lip as it can be too much. Red is always classy, seductive and sexy.
Smoky eyes
Go the other way and complement a beautiful complexion with strong smoky eyes. Choose a delicate hue over the lids such as plum, rose or grey, paired with super long black lashes. This look goes best with a natural nude or pink lip to really draw the attention to your eyes.
Highlighting and Contouring
It’s all the rage at the moment and for good reason. It instantly boosts your glow and accentuates your best features. It is most typically done on the bridge of your nose, tops of cheekbones and inner corners of the eyes, making your face look sharper yet still natural. The best part is that it makes you appear more photogenic as additional structure pops on camera.
While it’s our duty that you leave the salon looking perfect, we are committed to making sure your look lasts all day and night. Follow these simple tips on how to touch up during the day so that your make-up lasts:
Always make sure your make-up artist primes your skin before foundation. Primer 'seals in' your moisturiser and provides a smooth, even surface for makeup. Apply to the entire face and eyelids.
For longevity, always seal your makeup with powder to help it stay put. Carry powder in your purse so that you can apply during the day and remove any excess oil.
Make sure your mascara is waterproof. Whether you think you will cry or not, think twice about false lashes as tears will lift them right off. Curl your own lashes with a volumising waterproof mascara instead.
Always carry a touch-up kit including blush, translucent powder, blotting wipes, tissues and a lip gloss that matches your lipstick.
Enjoy your big day!

How to go From Brunette to Blonde
If you’re thinking of lightening your hair, we’ve got you covered. Going from brunette to blonde doesn’t have to be hard, especially with us.
Here’s our advice:
Hair Analysis
Be real about the current condition of your hair. If you’ve never coloured your hair before, you’re in luck because it’s a whole lot easier to go from brown to blonde. If your hair is already dyed, you’ll most probably need to have your colour stripped and lifted by one of our colour specialists which adds to the process.
Condition
To go lighter, your hair already needs to be in tip top healthy shape. This means booking yourself in for some in-salon and at home treatments in the lead up to changing colour. Our expert salon staff will be able to advise which treatment will be best for you after they analyse your hair.
Go gradually
Patience is the key when going from dark hair to light. We often recommend going gradually and lightening it over time. Every head of hair is different so you can’t put a time frame on it but going gradually will definitely help the integrity of your strands. Perhaps start with streaking or balayage. You’ll be happy you waited.
Be committed
Going blonde is a big commitment that requires patience and continuous maintenance. If you’re naturally dark you will start to get regrowth so will need regular salon appointments every 6-8 weeks. Breakage on the ends is also common so you will need to book in for regular trims and treatments.
Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for blonde hair
You don’t want to ruin your hair by using the wrong shampoo and conditioner when you go home. Check out our article on caring for blonde coloured hair. You will need to switch to a shampoo and conditioner formulated to nourish your blonde locks. We often recommend Olaplex No.4 and No.5 for this (which follows on from an in-salon Olaplex treatment), and also Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash which is a lavender-infused, colour enhancing shampoo that is perfect for all tones of blonde, even grey. The Kevin Murphy conditioners contain Shea and Murumuru butters to smooth and hydrate hair and keep your blonde looking bright, healthy and shiny!
Go easy with styling tools
Blondes need to me more mindful around using heating tools as they can be extremely drying and cause hair breakage. We would advise to give heating tools a break more often and embrace your natural style.
If you’ve nailed your blonde hair, take your hair to the next level with a pastel wash. Dusty Pink adds a fun twist and will last anywhere from 8-20 washes. Ideal for those wanting fashion forward and super fun results.

Making Your Spray Tan Last
Don't underestimate the power of a spray tan. It evens out skin tone, hides stretch marks, scars and cellulite, defines muscles and gives you instant body confidence. Not that you shouldn’t have that already!
Whether you need a tan for a wedding or special occasion, or simply want a natural day-to-day glow, we are here to help.
Timing Your Tan
It’s best to make your spray tan appointment 1-2 days before the big event to allow time to rinse and for the colour to absorb into your skin. Once you’ve made the appointment, it’s time to prepare your skin to ensure your tan lasts as long as possible.
By following these simple tips below, we promise you will enhance the lifespan of your spray tan.
Shave, Exfoliate and Moisturise
First things first is to get shaving or waxing out of the way before your tan to avoid stripping your colour off afterwards. Next step is to exfoliate the skin with a gentle scrub or dry body brush. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and other debris that can potentially block tanning agents causing clumps and streaks. Follow the exfoliating by moisturising. It’s best to do all this 24 hours before your tan to allow enough time for your pores to close and recover.
Wear Light Clothing
On the day of your spray, wear clothes that won’t cling to you. Your therapist will supply you with disposable underwear if you want and avoid wearing a bra so that the rubbing of straps won’t cause patchiness. Your therapist will dry you off properly with a drier before you get dressed to go home.
Moisturise (again)
It’s best to moisturise both before and after your spray tan as tanning agents can significantly dry out your skin and dry skin isn’t great for elongating your tan. Before your session and after you have shaved and exfoliated, apply some light moisturiser over the dry areas that are prone to tan build-up such as your knees, elbows, ankles and under your feet. Make sure the rest of your skin is free of products. Use a natural moisturiser or coconut oil on a regular basis after your session to lock it the colour and prevent it from fading. Apply a full layer twice a day or after every shower.
Gradual Self-Tan
Apply a gradual tan between spray tans to maintain the colour that your skin will lose as your tan begins to fade. We love St Tropez Gradual Tan which can be applied daily or every other day you’re feeling like a little top up. By lightly exfoliating and applying fresh product, you’ll consistently have a great tan that won’t fade away.
To book your appointment, contact the salon. And check out our latest offers for tan packages, because when you buy multiple sessions at once you get a discount.
Looking After Blonde (Coloured) Hair
Going blonde can be both super empowering and also high-maintenance, therefore it’s important you’re equipped with the right products and advice to ensure your blonde is kept healthy and glossy all year round.
At Indie Sky + Co we specialise in colouring hair blonde so we thought we would share our top tips for caring for your blonde after your session:
Add an in-salon Olaplex treatment
One of the best things you can do for your new blonde colour is actually something before you even leave the salon. At Indie Sky + Co we recommend and use Olaplex, which reconnects broken bonds in the hair. In-salon, and directly after your colour, we use Olaplex No.1 and No.2. We then supply you with Olapelx No.3 to take home and use 1-2 times a week.
Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for blonde hair
Blonde hair needs all the nourishment and protection it can get so the first thing after you colour your hair is to switch to a shampoo and conditioner formulated to nourish your blonde locks. Our Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash is a lavender-infused, colour enhancing shampoo that takes on all tones of blonde – from creamy to platinum and everything in between. With the help of added optical brighteners, it rescues dull colour instantly. If, after your in-salon treatment, you’re completely in love with Olaplex, we also sell their No.4 and No.5 formulas which are a take home shampoo and conditioner. Our salon staff can help you work out which product is right for you.
Treatment is so important
Going blonde will weaken hair, so regular treatment is so important and should be done every week. Use the Olaplex No.3 DIY especially for blonde coloured hair. There are other products you can also use as well as this. We love Kevin Murphy’s Leave In Repair, a nourishing leave-in treatment to repair and restore damage where it is most needed helping to repair and seal the cuticles. Always rinse out thoroughly after a treatment and then style accordingly. You can book in for an in-salon hair treatment to lock in extra nourishment and moisture as well, when you need it or if you have an event coming up.
Go easy with styling tools
Heating tools can be extremely drying and cause hair breakage so it may be wise to give your blonde hair a break every so often. Embrace your natural style whether that’s curly or straight, or opt for an up-do. You don’t need straighteners and curlers to look good! Au naturale can be just as great - especially if your colour is en pointe.
Protect your colour
Similarly to heating tools, the sun’s rays equally can cause dryness and colour to fade. Make sure to not spend too much time in the sun or as your mother would probably say, don’t forget your hat.
Likewise, blondes run the risk of their hair turning green when swimming in a chlorinated pool. Not going under water or wearing a swimming a cap is an option, otherwise apply a conditioner before entering the pool and be sure to wash your hair as soon as you come out of the water.
Book in for regular trims
Keep your ends in check by booking for a trim every 4-6 weeks to ensure your blonde mane is thick and luscious. Regrowth is also expected if you are not a natural blonde, so having your roots done on a regular basis must also be taken into consideration.
To book your appointment, contact the salon.
Bridal Hair Countdown
Is your wedding day looming? Are you starting to put the final touches on how you want your hair and make-up? It’s never too early to start preparing to ensure you get the look you dream of.
Below we talk you through our recommendations and all the dos and don’ts leading up to your big day – what you need to plan in advance, what to prepare in lead up and what to do on the day itself.
Hair Trial
At least 5-6 months before your big day is the best to book in with one of our hair stylists for a trial. It’s a good idea to book your appointment in the morning so that you can see how the hair sits throughout the day and make adjustments from there. You never know, you might need extra product, pins, hairspray when it comes time for the real thing. Bring any images of your dress, head crowns and veils or simply have a rough idea on the look you want to go for.
Hair Colour
Decide what hair colour you want to be earlier as well. The last thing you want is a colour you don’t love the week of your big day, right? Know the colour you want 6 months before and then spend the next few months maintaining it. It also allows you time to experiment with us and make any minor colour and cut adjustments.
Maintenance
Within the 6 months leading up to your big day, be sure to maintain your hair with regular cuts and colours. Every 4-6 weeks is usually what we recommend to brides. Plan your final cut and colour 1-2 weeks before the day to leave time for it to settle. Always keep your hair in the best condition with weekly hair masks, treatments and nourishing hair oils. We can do this for you or our salon experts can recommend some great at-home treatments. During the months leading up to your big day, it’s important to keep in contact with your stylist. If anything changes for you, we need to know.
The Big Day
In terms of washing your hair, do whatever you did on the day of your trial to ensure the same results. Try to use the same products too. It’s a great idea to note down what shampoo, conditioner and styling products you used initially.
Ensure your bridesmaids are carrying styling tools such as bobby pins and hair spray in case you need any touch ups during the day. Our Kevin Murphy Session.Spray is a gloss and hold product in one, it keeps hair in place without the stiffness of traditional hairsprays, and lets you and your style shine all day long.
PS. Did you know we also do wedding make-up? Find out more here.
